I tend to disagree. In ancient India, caste were based on profession. And a person’s life revolved around caste and religion. So an individual’s identity was his/her profession.
It was much later, that caste decided the profession.
Also, even in out parent’s generation, individuals were identified by profession. People were named “mastersaab”, “managersaab”, and so on.
An individual has always been identified with his/her primary activity (which mostly is their profession).
